"Robert Dunsire VC"
Robert Dunsire, a local lad, was a hero and inspiration to the people in this area. Born in Buckhaven, later living in Kirkcaldy, he worked in the coal mines alongside his father. Robert enlisted in the Army in January 1915, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War.
Within 9 months he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the ultimate honour in the British Armed Services for gallantry. He was fêted and paraded around the area on his home leave only to lose his life shortly after his return to the front. A sad outcome to a magnificent act of bravery.
“Robert Dunsire – The Story of a Victoria Cross” aims to explore the continuing legacy of First World War and help local young people in particular to broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world.
