  • May2010     Methil & the Merchant Marine

  • A life on the ocean wave is explored in the latest exhibition at Methil Heritage Centre.  The show, which is called Methil & the Merchant Marine, opened to the public on Tuesday 3 May and its launch was celebrated that evening by guests and members of the Friends of Methil Heritage who were joined by special guest Mr Andrew Wemyss.

Telling the story of the ports in and around Levenmouth, Methil & the Merchant Marine looks back at a time when Britain's merchant fleet was the largest in the world.   At one point Methil shipped out over 3 million tons of coal annually, but it wasn't just 'black diamonds” that passed through the docks of Levenmouth.  Flax, wool and many other goods were imported - and there are even tales that the ships of West Wemyss played a part in the transportation of slaves and convicts.

In December 2007 Friends of Methil Heritage received support from the Scottish Government-funded Digital Resources Development Team for their SCANIT project.

With a grant to buy equipment, and after specialised training, 7 dedicated Friends scanned almost 2000 photographs from the Heritage Centre's collection.

Now, anyone looking for a particular image can browse "thumbnail" versions in print and visitors can enjoy a continuous slide show of images of the area. The original photos are kept safe for the future while high quality electronic images will soon be accessible to all.
