September 9th 1967 saw the worst day in Fife’s mining history. As 311 men were about to complete their nightshift a seam of coal ignited in Michael Colliery in East Wemyss. Immediate efforts were made to warn the miners, but after a 36-hour rescue operation, nine men failed to survive the raging flames and thick choking black smoke. Three of the bodies were never recovered.
The pit was sealed and later closed by the National Coal Board seeing the end of 75 years of mining in the area. Almost half of the miners were paid off with the rest retired or transferred.
This poignant exhibition marks the 40th anniversary of the mining disaster that touched so many people’s lives.
We are currently seeking information, memories and pictures, of the events leading up to and after the disaster at the Michael Colliery on the 9th September 1967. The information is needed to complement the exhibition being held from 23 rd July to Oct in Mehtil Heritage Centre.
